Often, suffering seems to come upon us suddenly. One day we feel healthy, happy, and secure. The next day we are sick or injured, exhausted, and confused. The pain that invades our lives may stem from our own suffering or the suffering of someone close to us. But wherever it comes from, we do not notice it coming, and our confusion leads us to suspect God of wrongdoing.

In this classic book, republished in a revised and expanded edition, Dr. R. C. Sproul argues that suffering should not surprise us, but rather that we should be prepared for pain and sorrow in this life. Some do indeed have a “calling” to suffer, and we are all called to experience the ultimate suffering—death. The Lord promises in His Word that we will have hard times, but He also promises that He allows these sufferings for our good and His glory, and that He never gives us more than we can bear with His help.

Dr. Sproul offers sound biblical counsel and comfort for those who suffer and those who minister to the suffering, counsel that helps believers endure in times of trial with faith in a God who is loving and good.

Dr. R. C. Sproul was the founder of Ligonier Ministries, the first preacher and pastor of St. Andrew's Chapel in Sanford, Florida, and the first president of Reformed Bible College. He is the author of over one hundred books, including The Holiness of God.
