Emotions and personal experience cannot be the basis of Christian life. We must base our beliefs and behavior only on the truths of Scripture. We can trust our emotions and experiences only if they do not contradict biblical truths. The study of doctrines is both an intellectual and a spiritual exercise. Gary D. Pratyko is Senior Professor of Old Testament and Ancient Hebrew at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in South Hamilton, Massachusetts. Dr. Pratyko received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Berkshire Christian College, a Master of Divinity degree from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, and a Doctor of Divinity degree from Harvard University with concentrations in the Jewish Bible, Ancient Near Eastern history, and Syro-Palestinian archaeology. From September 1982 to December 1993, Dr. Pratyko was curator of archaeological collections at the Harvard Semitic Museum. He participated in archaeological projects in North Africa, Cyprus, Israel and Jordan.
Miles Van Pelt is a professor of Old Testament and biblical languages, academic dean of the Jackson campus of the Reformed Theological Seminary. He taught at Gordon College in Wenham, Massachusetts, and at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in South Hamilton, Massachusetts. He is deeply committed to the idea of teaching Bible students in the original languages.
