Humility is the virtue that so impresses us in others, and which (if we are honest) we so lack in ourselves. Scripture clearly states that it—along with love—is the cornerstone of Christian character, upon which all else is built, and a fundamental characteristic of a life of faith. So how can we make humility our daily practice and learn to grow in it?

Jerry Bridges believes that in the Beatitudes, Jesus gave us a comprehensive guide to what humility looks like in action. Beginning with the recognition of poverty of spirit—our utter inability to please God by our own efforts—through sorrow for our sins, a thirst for righteousness and purity of heart, and some experience of persecution for the truth, we discover that humility is in itself a great blessing. At every step, the Holy Spirit, who works in us and at the same time enables us to act, grants grace to the humble and elevates them to new blessings.
