Herman Bavink was born in the Netherlands in the family of a reformed pastor. In 1880, he graduated from Leiden University and defended his doctoral thesis with honors. After serving for one hour as a pastor of the Reformed Church in the north of the country, he accepted the invitation of the Theological Seminary in Kempen and taught dogmatics and ethics there for 20 years. In 1902, Bavink left Kampen and was appointed a professor at the Free University in Amsterdam. In 1911, he became a member of parliament and until his death combined teaching and political activities. "Reformer Dogmatics" is the main work of Herman Bavinka.
